Tapeta User Interface

The user interface on the PDA is somewhat more complicated - because it has to be simpler in order to fit the screen.

To keep the complexity down, the PDA will not have the same archive and audit trail abilities of the desktop application. That is very important as the screen is much much smaller.

There will be many more screens in the PDA application

General Screen Designs

We will try to standardize on several consistent screen designs in order to make the system more usable for the physician while on call.

PDA Screen Design

The basic screen design will consist of the following elements:

Title Bar

The title bar will have information relevant to This is a standard way of representing the program on the PDA and is valuable real estate on the screen that we can use.

For non-patient specific areas (eg the search screen or the flag list screen), the title of the screen will be given. For patient specific screens, a short title of the section will be shown plus the name of the patient. When looking up patient data, the name of the patient should be visible on all screens.

Search

Like the desktop application, the PDA application will be primarily patient centric and should allow the user to quickly search for a new patient. Therefore, searching for new patient will be accessible from the application on all screens through a button on the top right corner of the screen.

Pressing this button when on the search screen should clear the current search.

Screen Details

This sub heading will be specific to the screen. It will not be editable. For patient screens it will show more information about the patient – age and health number, specifically.

For non-patient screens it can provide additional instructions or be omitted.

Workspace

The workspace will be the main area where data will be edited / added to the system.

Where possible pick lists will be used to speed data entry.

Comment fields will be available to be read and edited.

Navigation / Confirmation Area

The navigation section will be at the bottom of the screen. This will be used for confirmation of actions as well as moving between screens in a section.

For example, when in the “Add / Edit Medical Problem” screen the user will confirm an update of the problem in this bar and have the ability to move between sections of the medical summary through

Having the navigation and confirmation at the bottom of the screen works well for pen based systems as it minimizes the amount of the screen that is covered by the users hand while tapping buttons.
